Your own species list #

Every ENTOMONE account has its own private list of taxa. It contains all names you use in your records: full species and subspecies identifications as well as partial ones such as Cerambyx sp..

Where entries come from #

The list fills itself. When you pick a taxon from the suggestions in the record form, or type your own name, and save the record, ENTOMONE:

  • reuses the entry you already have if the name is the same,
  • adds a new entry, with its genus and family, if the name is not on your list yet.

Adding names by hand in Dictionaries is not needed to save a record.

What one entry stores #

  • Your name - exactly as you wrote it, including a subspecies or a partial identification.
  • Author and family - ENTOMONE sets the family from the taxonomic tree when the taxon has been recognised.
  • iNaturalist link - needed to publish observations.
  • Catalogue of Life link - used for classification and for searching by higher ranks, such as subfamily or tribe.

A record points to this single entry. A spelling or author correction in Dictionaries therefore applies to all your records of that taxon.

Your list and other users' lists #

The same name can exist on many people's lists; this is not a duplicate. Each list is independent: corrections and links on your list do not change other accounts' lists, and their changes do not change yours.

In a shared dataset the taxon of a record belongs to the list of the record owner, not to the person editing it.

Your name and names in iNaturalist and the Catalogue of Life #

Names in external catalogues change over time and do not always match between the two sources. ENTOMONE does not change your identification automatically. It bases the classification, such as the family, primarily on the Catalogue of Life, and uses the iNaturalist link for publishing.
