Why ENTOMONE exists #

ENTOMONE was created out of the need to record observation data from expeditions, trips and field work. The goal is to organise the data, document it and prepare it for later publication, including the option to export selected data to iNaturalist.

Why not Excel or Access #

The need for an application like this has existed for a long time. Excel and Access have large capabilities, but in practice they are not a convenient tool for an entomologist's whole workflow.

Entomological data is not just a spreadsheet. It is photos, GPS, dates, observers, sites, species, host plants, notes, galleries and later reports. The more data you have, the more useful an application becomes that can organise it and search it in different ways.

In ENTOMONE, data can be searched through the taxon tree, geographically, by date, by observer, by host plant, by notes and by other fields.

Why not only iNaturalist #

iNaturalist is very good in this respect, but it has several traits that do not fit a private entomologist database.

iNaturalist is built around public observations. It is not meant for storing private data with hidden photos and hidden locations, and it is not meant for digitising a collection, where you need a complete set of photos and specimen data.

ENTOMONE solves this differently. It is your private database. You can store field data, collection data, notes, photos, sites and working records in it. Only the records you choose get published to iNaturalist.

What such an app gives you #

Using ENTOMONE gives you the ability to take control of your entire data collection.

The program supports:

  • a record based on a photo,
  • a manually entered record,
  • quick observation entry,
  • sites and reading geo data from photos,
  • a site overview,
  • species lists,
  • record lists,
  • photo galleries for sites, records and species,
  • HTML reports,
  • import and export,
  • a UTM map,
  • phone-based work,
  • voice dictation and AI for data recognition,
  • publication of selected observations to iNaturalist.

ENTOMONE is the database; iNaturalist is a publication channel #

iNaturalist is only one of the options in ENTOMONE. The app is not meant to push every record out to iNaturalist.

The main goal is different: cataloguing your own field data and collection data. Publishing to iNaturalist is one option, alongside a report, an export or preparing data for publication.
